I'm not sure where the actual number is. the 81 on my avenger has a silver EMG logo, and the 85 has a gold one

i tried to do something similar a week ago,but i wasn't satisfied so much to be onest!the89 bridge was enormous, huge in every sense, but it lacked the bite and the crunchy sound the 81 has, while the 81 in the neck was lacking body and fatness

Funny, I actually think the 89 has a nicer crunch compared to the 81. The 81 is perfect for cleans/shredz0rz solo's though because it lacks the fatness

Hmm I'm not that happy with the sound of the new 2005 Blackjack, which arrived today. It has a SD JB/59 set up, which is a combination I like but the sound just isn't connecting through my fingers. I suspect that's because it has beefy stiff strings that look past their use by date.
Action seems good, pick-ups sound right but I just can't get feeling into my play

I'm much happier with the Blackjack and new strings on.
It had some sort of heavy and had been down tuned so it made it really tight to play on standard tuning. It as 11's and think I'll take it down to 10's. The sound is better and the pups have plenty of oomph.

Re: EMG 81 in the neck position

I think I fried my Damien Elite-6 FR, lol. I did the swap and the pups for some reason were loud as hell for like 3 seconds and then got real quiet. I replaced the battery and no change. Swapped the pups back and still the same outcome. I should have left it alone, lol. Fuck it, I'm going to put new active pups in it. Time to do some research and make a decision.
